Chapter Twenty-Four
Tuesday â December 7, 1971
With waves of farewell, and an admonishment to feel better soon, the Blagdon girls dropped Denney back at the Sorority after the funeral. The first thing Denney did once she reached her room was to take the medicine she had forgotten to take that morning; then, she called her mother. Denney hung up after half an hour of assuaging her guilt. She still felt unsettled, but decided she better start writing her poetry paper.
By the time Kellie stuck her head in a couple of hours later to return the floating suit, she found Denney, tissue box at her side, typing diligently. âHow are you feeling?â
âAlmost human. The medicine they gave me at Health Service really seems to be working.â
âWell, Iâm going to grab a quick nap, but I thought I would see if you need anything.â
âNo, thanks. Iâm on a roll right now on my paper. Hopefully, by the time you finish your nap, Iâll be finished with my draft.â
âOne of the few times Iâm ahead of you. I wrote my paper the other day. So, I really have time to take a nap. See you later.â
Denney returned her attention to flipping through the books that lay open around her. She had marked different pages in each of them so that she could easily pick and choose from the thoughts of different commentators for inclusion in her own critique. Her greatest difficulty was summarizing their ideas to fit on only two pages.
As she opened one of the books that she had previously bookmarked, her right arm shot up above her head. Startled, she reached up with her left hand and pulled it down. Her right arm was tingling. Deciding that perhaps she had dosed off and dreamt that her arm didnât want to be part of anything that might resemble plagiarism, Denney opted to take a break. Perhaps walking down the hall to the bathroom and splashing some water on her face would wake her up.
She stumbled as she stood up, but the sensation of being off balance quickly passed. In the ladies room, Denney washed and dried her face. She peered at her reflection in the mirror. The mirrored image seemed lopsided. She tried to straighten up, but still looked like she was listing to the left. Denney stared at herself in the mirror and then said: âAh, this is how the hunchback of Notre Dame must have felt when he looked at his hump.â âNo, donât be silly,â another voice in her head chided. âThis is how Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde began.â
Deciding that she really was standing normally and that holding discussions with herself in the bathroom mirror was not going to get her paper finished, Denney started back to her bedroom. She had taken just a few steps down the hall, when the fire door of the main staircase opened and Marilyn yelled: âMan on the floor. Man on the floor.â Without looking to see if the hallway was clear, Marilyn waved for her parents to follow her.
